RBPO$$_{5}$$(R=Ca, Sr)-based storage phosphors for neutron detection

Storage characteristics of RBPO$$_{5}$$(R=Ca, Sr) based phosphors have been investigated for neutron detection. To increase the photostimulated luminescence (PSL) yields of CaBPO$$_{5}$$:Ce$$^{3+}$$ and SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Ce$$^{3+}$$ phosphors, fluorine atoms were introduced and the molar ratio of the fluorine atoms was optimized for the PSL yields. In addition, the authors found that the PSL yields of SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Eu$$^{2+}$$ phosphors were significantly increased by adding Li$$_{2}$$B$$_{4}$$O$$_{7}$$, though introducing fluorine and brome atoms in the phosphor was not effective for the PSL yields. These phosphors will be usable as new neutron storage phosphors with low $$gamma$$-ray sensitivity because they consist of light materials.

As a new candidate for raw materials of a neutron imaging plate, characteristics of a SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Eu$$^{2+}$$ phosphor that has boron (B) in the base matrix as a neutron converter have been investigated. The phosphor has a strong merit that it generates photostimulated luminescence of 390 nm by illumination of red laser light after neutron irradiation. The emission and excitation wavelengths were the same as those of commercially available neutron imaging plate. Therefore, the authors have fabricated neutron imaging plates by painting the phosphor on Al plates. Neutron imaging experiments using the fabricated imaging plates were carried out with a commercially available image reader. A Li block was used as a camera subject in the experiments. As a result of the experiments, it was confirmed that the neutron image was clearly obtained, though the intensity of the image was not so high. The position resolution of 0.2 mm was obtained when the readout resolution of 50 $$mu$$m in the reader was used.

A phosphor material such as SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Eu$$^{2+}$$ has been investigated for two-dimensional imaging for pulsed-neutron source. The authors found this phosphor itself shows photostimulated luminescence (PSL) by illumination of 635 nm laser light after neutron irradiation without adding any neutron sensitive materials such as Gd. The PSL intensity per neutron flux was proportional to E$$^{-0.5}$$, where E is neutron energy. The neutron sensitivity was increased by using enriched boron instead of natural boron. The S$$_{gamma}$$/S$$_{n}$$ ratio of this phosphor using enriched boron was better than that of a commercially available imaging plate, where S$$_{gamma}$$ and S$$_{n}$$ are gamma and neutron sensitivities, respectively.

A collimated neutron beam image was clearly obtained with the phosphor sample by scanning focused laser light on it.
